Nasarawa State University Receives N308.4m From TETFUND

KEFFI - (Nassarawa) - Nassarawa State University, Keffi, yesterday said it received over N308.4 million from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for academic staff training and infrastructure development between 2008 and 2012.

Mr Bankole Adeowu, the acting Director, Physical Planning Unit of the institution said this in an interview with newsmen in Keffi.

He said that the special intervention by the Fund had led to postive changes in the physical structures of the university and the quality of its academic content.

“This institution has benefited a lot from TEFUND intervention projects from 2008 to 2012.
“As you can see by yourself, the development that has taken place within the period under review changed the institution positively.

“Through special intervention from TEFUND, the institution has constructed the Faculty of Law, basket ball and volleyball courts as well as the administrative block office of the Faculty of Agriculture.

“Through funding from TEFUND, the institution has also furnished and equipped the Faculty of Law, bought 18-sitter buses, constructed a Law library and a 500-capacity lecture hall, among others.”

Adeowu further said that the money was used to construct lecture theaters of the faculties of Law, Social Sciences and Administration.

According to him, the training of academic staff has led to improved productivity and quality service delivery.

NUC Shuts Down Nine Fake Universities Over Illegal Licence

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has shut down nine universities in Nigeria for operating without legal licenses.

The publication of the affected institutions was published in the NUC weekly bulletin. Report says the Prof. Julius Okojie, the NUC’s executive secretary, signed the publication. He stated that the universities have been in existence for years and have just being extorting money from students who were given fake certificates.

The listed universities are those affected;
National University of Nigeria, Keffi (Nasarawa State); North Central University, Otukpo (Benue State); Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, (Enugu
Richmond Open University, Arochukwu (Abia State)
Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti (Ekiti State)
West Coast University, Umuahia,
Volta University College, Aba, (Abia State) and
the satellite campuses of Ambrose Ali University.

The publication also reveal that: “In addition to the closure, the following `Degree Mills’ are currently undergoing court actions; the purpose of these actions is to prosecute the proprietors and recover illegal fees and charges on subscribers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronizes or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk.

“Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognized for the purposes of NYSC, employment and further studies.”

NUC also persuaded Nigerians to disconnect themselves from the institutions and their certificates.

While some are being closed, new private universities have been recommended to the president for approval.

NUC also stated that they are considering introduction of a pre-Doctoral Programme in the postgraduate studies in Nigerian universities. This was said while Prof Okojie was at an interactive session with Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN).

He explained that the universities listed on the proposal sent to the president through the Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Minister of Education have all being approved by NUC but would also receive the input and approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He said access to university education has been a challenge in the country with over one million Nigerians, who were, on annual basis, unable to gain admission into the limited tertiary institutions because of low carrying capacity.

The executive secretary of NUC has said, that NUC is considering the introduction of pre- Ph.D. programme in Nigerian universities based on the recommendation of some of the vice chancellors.

Advice To All Freshers In Nsuk

I hope this isn't coming too late. I
know almost all admitted 'freshmen'
have started classes so you will have to
pardon me for writing this now Like the
popular adage says, "it is better late
than never". Or too early for those waiting to be admitted into their choice institutions.

1. STUDY AND DON'T READ
There is a difference between the two
words. The Bible had always
admonished its readers to study it and
has never asked people to JUST READ
IT. To study means to do more than
reading. To memorise, to jot, to
paraphrase etc. So as you just jumped
into this ship called 'higher education'
be prepared to study.

2. DROP YOUR "BIG BOYISM" AT HOME
Well it is still a shame that undergrads
go around town with high shoulders all
in the sickening belief that they are BIG
BOYS AND GIRLS. At 25 you still call
yourself a big BOY? Then you need to
visit your pastor for deliverance. The
university is not a place to argue with
your lecturers and professors unless you
want to turn a four years course to a six
years course. How? Why? Answer= Just
one lecturer has the power to fail you
for five good years and then still walk
around freely. So be humble. Pull up
your pants and eschew sagged trousers
like a plague. An undergrad is a young
adult and not a BIG BABY.

3. AVOID POLITICAL ENGAGEMENTS
No matter how much you think you
know, school politics will always be a
distraction to you. I have seen many
administrationscome and go yet none
has done anything worthwhile. It's all
about sponging funds and less or no
service at all. Politics in school is highly
redundant. It has the capacity to take
away your security and then
consummates in death.

4. DONT FIGHT IN & OUTSIDE THE
CAMPUS
Fighting isnt allowed in universities. If
you punch anybody and you get caught
then you stand a chance of being
awarded a generous compulsory holiday
at home. You will be rusticated or
maybe suspended. It all means that
your parents may never forgive you for
wasting their expenses on you.

5. AVOID THE CULT GUYS
Unfortunately, almost every university
has the unwelcomed presence of the
cult guys. There are also female cult
groups that can choose To Molest a guy
to death or put up any other nefarious
act. Just avoid those guys if you can
identify them. If they 'toast' you please
bluntly and firmly resist or you may lose
your neck right there. When they come
dont run, stand your ground and they
will respect you. But never be insultive
or prove to know more than them. Just
insist that you made a choice not to
'belong' and that you will never
'belong'.

6. DONT PLAY WITH ASSIGNMENTS
All exams carries 70 marks except
projects and reports. But even if you
score 70 over 70 in exams you may still
fail if you never did the assignments and
took the tests.

7. DONT READ AT NIGHT
The best time to read your books is
between 5pm to 10pm. You should
sleep by 10pm or you will only share
your attention with sleep and half with
the books. Sleep early and then read by
4am or 5am when you are awake. It is
more better that way.

8. DROP THE PIDGIN
The university is the highest level of
education so if an undergraduate cannot
speak excellent english then what is the
essence of being in school in the first
place?
You are in campus not a motor park so
please speak correct and well polished
english. Just flaunt those pure accent.
Show them you are an undergrad.

9. DONT BE IN A HURRY.
The university was initially a place for
26yrs old and above so if you are below
30yrs then please dont rush. Study only
what you were destined for. When a
man God had designed to be the best
doctor in the world ends up studying
forestry what do you expect? Ans:
TOTAL FAILURE!

10. YOU ARE NOT YET DONE.
There is a difference between a FINAL
YEAR STUDENT and a YEAR FOUR, FIVE,
SIX, OR SEVEN STUDENT. If your course
will last for FOUR YEARS and you are in
the FOURTH YEAR, it doesnt means that
you are done. Just one course you failed
since your YEAR ONE can keep you in
school for another FOUR YEARS!

11. NO RIOT IS IN YOUR FAVOUR
No matter your agitations, the school
will never feel the pains of your anger.
You will destroy school properties in
revenge and anger and then be forced
to pay for the damage with a little
balance left for the sch administration!

12. DONT GO LOOKING FOR A WIFE IN
SCHOOL
While in your final year please resist the
pressure to pick a girl. Give yourself
time. Outside the university you may
have your wife eagerly waiting for you.

NSUK Would Finally Resume Academic Activities On Oct 12, 2014

The authorities of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has concluded all necessary arrangement to resume academic activities on Sunday, October, 12, 2014.

Speaking exclusively to liveschoolnews grapevine, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Muhammad Akaro Mainoma, said the institution would finally resume on Sunday, 12th October, 2014.

It would be re-called that the management of the university sent students on a long vacation that lasted for over three months.

The vice chancellor however told our correspondent that “the management has scheduled Sunday, October 12 for resumption, after a previous resumption date was cancelled.”

Professor Mainoma said the long break was necessary to allow the university address some outstanding issues which cropped up from the last strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and other shortcomings.

He named students’ examination results as one of the outstanding issues, explaining that “for three years, results were not processed.” He said examination results were not marked and released to students within the period, which affected academic planning and execution.

Professor Mainoma said the university is stable now, after the four-month vacation during which the institution was able to handle the outstanding issues.

He expressed confidence that if the university system in the country is not plunged into another crisis, NSUK will remain stable.
